The above photo was taken from the lanai (balcony) of an apartment near the Waikiki side of Diamond Head crater in Hawaii. I was staying with a friend, and had lived on that same street many years previously. The view of the green mountains stirs my heart still. I believe we are looking into the Palolo Valley.
I was born in Spokane, Washington. We lived in Seattle for a couple of years before moving to Southern California so my dad could work at Disneyland as a caricature artist. I grew up there - in Southern California, and at Disneyland. Honolulu was my home from my mid-teens to mid-twenties, when the adventure bug bit me hard.
I immigrated to Australia.
That was over 40 years ago. In that time I have lived in Queensland, Tasmania, London, Auckland, Sydney, and now back in New Zealand, in Wellington.
Okay, this is an abbreviated narrative of my career path. I have left out many details, such as the influence of partner, children, parents and siblings - those stories are for another time and place.
I have just moved back to New Zealand, this time Wellington, to be with my daughter as she embarks on the journey of motherhood.
As I write this, I am still working on the shape and direction for this season of my life. I have said for years: I will paint when I grow up. I'm not sure I'm grown up, but I suspect it's time for me to paint.
Regarding social media:
I have taken a break from Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, as I work through reflections on how I choose to spend my mental and emotional energy.
